Plans de contingence est une exposition résultant de cinq ans d’exploration de récits de survie de science-fiction, de mouvements collectifs et de sculptures métaphysiques. La perception et la dimension sont explorées à travers des noeuds, des suspensions, des performances vidéo et de la radio ionosphérique. Au-delà de la stratégie pour faire face à la catastrophe, la « contingence » se réfère à l’état fondamental du changement et de l’incertitude, où les fondements de la réalité sont en constante évolution et où tout est possible.
Sexton crée des méthodes spéculatives pour faire face à l’anxiété future et à notre présent paradoxal, pris dans le capitalisme tardif (déjà mort). Ses œuvres se glissent dans les fissures des récits de contrôle et des structures de pouvoir, dissolvant les frontières et les hiérarchies, en utilisant souvent l’humour comme tactique. Cherchant à démythifier la théorie et à élever l’expérience vécue dans toute son étrange beauté, elle mobilise des matériaux du quotidien comme agents d’autonomisation et de transformation.
Le paracorde, inventé par l’armée américaine et popularisé sous forme de bracelets de survie, permet à celui qui le porte de défaire le cordon en cas d’urgence… une idée intéressante, mais très limitée compte tenu des problèmes auxquels notre monde est confronté. En utilisant le bracelet de survie comme point de départ, Sexton crée une série de sculptures de nœuds complexes, qu’elle considère comme des prothèses métaphysiques : des harnais qui nous accordent de nouvelles capacités et nous protègent du mal, agissant simultanément comme douces entraves au scepticisme. Des structures circulaires pour contenir, amplifier, concentrer ou dévier l’énergie au besoin. Des abris dans des abris, des formes topologiques qui résonnent à travers les dimensions.
Erin Sexton (née en 1982) est une artiste canadienne basée dans un dôme dans la forêt près d’Oslo. Ses sculptures et installations impliquent objets trouvés, forces cachées, récits de science-fiction, matériaux du quotidien et techniques à la MacGyver. Psychédélique et émancipatrice, son travail explore paradigmes alternatifs, topologies étranges, apocalypses douces et technologies métaphysiques. Elle détient une licence de radio amateur, un BFA de l’Université Concordia à Montréal et un MFA de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Bergen, en Norvège.
Contingency Plans / Plans de Contingence is an exhibition resulting from a 5 year exploration of sci-fi survival narratives, collective movement, and metaphysical sculpture. Perception and dimensionality are investigated via knots, suspension, video performance, and ionospheric radio. Beyond strategizing to cope with catastrophe, ‘contingency’ refers to the fundamental state of change and uncertainty, where the foundation of reality is in constant flux, and absolutely anything is possible.
Sexton creates speculative methods for coping with future anxiety and our paradoxical present, caught within late (already dead) capitalism. Her works slide into cracks in control narratives and power structures, dissolving boundaries and hierarchies, often using humour as a tactic. Seeking to humble the theoretical and elevate lived experience in all its beautiful strangeness, she mobilizes everyday materials as agents of empowerment and transformation.
Paracord was invented by the U.S. military and has been popularized in the form of survival bracelets. One can unravel the cord for use in an emergency… an interesting idea, but in light of the problems our world is facing, one with very limited application.
With the survival bracelet as her starting point, Sexton created a series of complex knotted sculptures that she considers as metaphysical prosthetics: Harnesses that grant us new abilities and protect us from harm, doubling as gentle restraints for skepticism. Circular net structures to contain, amplify, focus, or deflect energy as needed. Shelters within shelters, topological forms that resonate across dimensions.
New work and traces of the project’s history are presented within a site-specific installation at Le Lieu. She is thrilled to be able to realize this very delayed exhibition and finally return to la belle province de son coeur.
